R. Dennis Shelby, PhD. is a Training and Supervising Analyst at Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, the President of Chicago Psychoanalytic Society, the Director of Distance Education in Chicago Psychoanalytic Institute and Professor Emeritus at the Institute for Clinical Social Work. He is the chair of the Committee on Advocacy Relations, member of the Service Members and Veterans Initiative, Gender and Sexuality Committees and a mentor for the Teacher’s Academy of the American Psychoanalytic Association. He is a graduate of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, The Institute for Clinical Social Work and Loyola University School of Social Work.
Dr. Shelby is on the editorial boards of Journal of Psychoanalytic Social Work and Journal of HIV/AIDS Social Services journals and a member of American Psychoanalytic Association and International Psychoanalytic Association (IPA).
His current interests include: intercultural psychoanalysis, supervision and education; war-related trauma and distress; Ottoman and Sufi approaches to dream interpretation and mental health treatment. He is active in international psychoanalytic education and maintains clinical and consultation practices in Chicago and Chesterton, Indiana.
He has published and presented on a wide range of areas such as Research and Clinical work with AIDS/HIV, Self-Psychology, Psychoanalysis and Gay Men, Qualitative Research, Gender and Sexuality, Psychoanalytic Theories of War Trauma and Psychoanalytic Education.
He has published papers in Progress in Self Psychology, The Annual of the Chicago Institute for Psychoanalysis, Journal of the American Psychoanalytic Association and the International Journal of Psychoanalysis.
